Home and Business Security: why you should hide your CCTV recorders.

Professional burglars will go to almost any lengths to cover their tracks after committing a crime, with the obvious objective to minimise the risk of getting caught and prosecuted for the crime.

These experienced thieves and criminals will often follow a couple of simple ‘rules’ to reduce risk of prosecution:

1. Avoid being seen

Whether the act under the cover of darkness or during a quieter time during the day, a criminal will try at all costs to carry out the crime when no one else is there. They even try to avoid bumping into people in the vicinity before and after the crime takes place, as this adds complexity, decreases the time they have on the premises and increases attention from witnesses and Gardaí.

2. Speed is key

A burglar needs the crime to happen quickly and effectively. The faster then can get in and out of the premises and get what they want, the less likely they will be seen by witnesses.

3. Leave no trace

Where possible, criminals will look for and take any visible CCTV recorders, especially if they think CCTV may have caught them in the act. This is becoming increasingly common and can cause even more damage to the premises of security conscious home and business owners.

Home and Business owners must take extra security precautions

Using the recorder as a screen rest for the CCTV monitor in the office or other location should be avoided where possible.

Following these steps will not only reduce the chances of extra damage but increase the chances of a successful conviction should a crime occur.

  1. Ensure the CCTV monitor and recorder are not stored in the same location.

  2. Where possible place the recorder in an attic or similar, out-of-sight, hard to reach location.

  3. Using steel, bolt-down, lockable communications enclosures should be considered.

  4. Consider placing a dummy recorder in a visible location.

  5. Record as much content as possible to the cloud. With significant advancements in cloud technology and decreasing costs associated with renting cloud storage, it is now possible to record and securely store footage directly from the CCTV recorder in real time. In this situation even if the CCTV recorder is taken during a burglary there will be alarm and other CCTV events stored remotely on the cloud. It is possible to retain low frame rate footage to the cloud 24/7.

And remember, ensuring your surveillance system is operating correctly and capturing good clean and sharp footage will always act as an effective deterrent.
